Location independent income or portable careers are a means of untethering yourself from the 9-5. It is work you can do from anywhere with your laptop, an internet connection and a bit of expertise. You can almost always do these jobs from any place in the world, at any time.
There are some portable careers that do have time of day requirements with more structure to them. Some people prefer the structure of those types of jobs. We do not have a view point on the benefits of one over the other, but rather suggest people seek arrangements that suit them.
Certain online businesses are conducive to residual income. This is income that keeps on coming, often without any action by you after the initial effort, although usually there is some related effort to sustain it. An example would be publishing an eBook. After it is written you can be sleeping and have sales of the book. However you may want to do some promotion of said book to boost sales.
